During the summer of 2008 I was appointed strength and conditioning coach at Beaconsfield Rugby Club. The previous season they had started the campaign extremely well and were unbeaten up until Christmas, however as the season went on it was apparent that there fitness levels were not adequate and finally finished 4th in the league. My sole aim was to improve their strength and fitness for the new season so that they could maintain their performance through out the season. On the first training session each player received their own strength and conditioning book. This included nutritional information, a stretching plan and separate forwards and backs strength and conditioning programmes all of which were specific for rugby. They were then fitness tested and all results recorded. Over the 10 week pre season training period, I designed new and innovative ways of training the forwards and backs specifically for there individual roles, they were also fitness tested on 2 further occasions. Every player without exception improved on there initial fitness scores and all the players commented on how much fitter and stronger they felt for the coming season.
